There are three different ignition systems used during the five years that the Weber Genesis Silver grills were in production. All of the igniters were piezoelectric and did not use a battery. This post will walk you through the differences so you can buy the one that actually fits your Silver.
I have included Weber’s instructions for how to change out the igniters (downloadable PDF) as well as a nice little video at the end of this post that walks you through the process.
In 2000 and 2001 the Weber Genesis Silver A, B and C grills utilized an igniter that was held in place with a lock nut.
The Push Button and Igniter cap were greyish black. Here is a picture of an old one I took off of my Silver A. Apologies for the rust 🙂
If your igniter has a lock nut and looks like what is pictured above then here is what you need. Older Igniter Kit
Here are the instructions for changing the igniter on the Weber Genesis Silver A, B and C grills from 2000 and 2001.
In 2002 Weber changed the design of the ignition system to a Snap-Fit model. This igniter is the one pictured at the top right of this post. Here is the detail on how it fits in the grill.
If your igniter does not have a lock nut and has a red push button then here is what you need. Newer Igniter Kit
Here are the instructions for changing the igniter on the Weber Genesis Silver A and B grills manufactured after 2002. This is also the igniter used in the Weber Genesis Silver C between 2002 and 2004. The C model grills had two of these igniters; one for the main burners and a second for the side burner.
In 2004 Weber removed the second igniter from the Silver C grills and installed a dual piezoelectric lighter that lit both the main and side burners. This igniter was also used in the 2005 Silver C grills. If this describes the igniter on your Silver C then here is what you need. Weber Dual Wire Igniter for ’04-’05 Genesis Silver C
Here are the instructions for changing the igniter on Weber Genesis Silver C grill manufactured in 2004 and 2005.
If you want to see exactly how to change the ignition system give this video a watch 🙂
